TEXT: Matthew 26:7-16.
The name Judas, which is another way of writing Judah, seems
to be totally different from the latter. A name which is interpreted as
“Praise” seemed to have a different meaning after one of Jesus’ disciples by
his personality gave it a terrible stigma.
Sometimes we allow our actions and desires betray our original intent,
thereby making us unpopular.
The man Judas was not
necessarily evil but in his ambition to get things done, he tried to impose his
agenda in the life of the one he ought to take instructions from. Motivated by
his ambitions, he subtly tried to manipulate things to play out according to
his own script; he thought selling Jesus would force Him to prove that he is
the messiah. Judas’ idea of the messiah was that of a political leader who
would deliver the children of Israel out of the hand of the Roman government
(Matt 27:3). His expectation was that when his master rose to power he too
would become very important and be given a sensitive position, but he was so
disappointed afterwards that he did not see any need to continue living. Those
walking in the spirit of Judas have a different reason for following their
leader. They have a hard time expressing their true allegiance to their leader.
Somebody once said “if you read through the Bible you will find out that Judas
never called Jesus “Lord”, he called him “master” meaning “teacher.” In other
words, the spirit of Judas is one that refuses to acknowledge the true destiny
of his leader because it has its own aspiration. The name Judas means praise
but the praise from this character we are talking about is only a lip service
to attract some favour they seek. May God deliver us from the spirit of Judas.
