HYMN – THERE IS A FOUNTAIN

MAY 8TH

TEXT: JOHN 19:34, EPHESIANS 1:7; COLOSSIANS 1:20; HEBREWS 9:12-14

Memory Verse: But now in Christ Jesus you who were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ (Ephesians 2:13)

William Cowper is viewed by some as one of the finest of all English writers. But Cowper’s emotional life was once of great turmoil. At an early age he was directed by his father to study law. Upon completion of his studies, however, the prospect of appearing for his final examination before the bar so frightened him that it caused a mental breakdown and even an attempted suicide. Later he was placed in an insane asylum for 18 months.
During this detention, he one day read from the Scriptures the passages in Romans 3:25 that Jesus Christ is “set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood, to declare His righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God.” Through his reading of the Bible, Cowper soon developed a personal relationship with Christ and a sense of forgiveness of sin. This was in 1764, when he was 33 years old.
Three years later, Cowper was invited to move to Olney, England, where John Newton pastored the parish Anglican Church. It was here for nearly two decades that Newton and Cowper had a close personal friendship. In 1779 their combined talents produced the famous Olney Hymns hymnal, one of the most important single contributions made to the field of evangelical hymnody. In this ambitious collection of 349 hymns, sixty-seven were written by Cowper with the remainder by Newton.
“There is a Fountain” was originally titled “Peace for the Fountain Opened.” The hymn, with its vivid imagery, is based on the Old Testament text, Zechariah 13:1 – “In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and uncleanness.”
Only eternity will reveal the hosts who, through the singing of this hymn, have been made aware of the efficacy of Christ’s complete atonement.
There is a Fountain filled with blood drawn from Immanuel’s veins, and sinners plunged beneath the flood lose all their guilty stains.
The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day, and there may I, through vile as he, wash all my sins away.
Dear dying lamb, Thy precious blood shall never lose its pow’r, till all the ransomed Church of God be saved to sin no more.
E’er since by faith I saw the stream, Thy flowing wounds supply, redeeming love has been my theme and shall be till I die.
When this poor lisping, stamm’ring tongue lies silent in the grave, then in a nobler, sweeter song, I’ll sing Thy pow’r to save.

ACTION POINT: Carry the joy of “redeeming love” as your day’s theme.

UNDERSTANDING SCRIPTURAL PRINCIPLES ON GIVING (PART 3)

MAY 7TH

TEXT: 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 King James Version (KJV)
6.   But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.
7.   Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

The word of God is very clear on giving, but too often we add our own interpretation to frustrate the original intention thereby making it too burdensome for many to obey the scriptures.
There are ministers who tell their members to demonstrate their trust in God by borrowing to give to God. But I am yet to find any support of that position from the word of God.
Giving to the things of God is designed by the Lord to be very simple.
God does not want us to give under pressure or out of duress, neither does He expect us to give out of necessity or emotionally. Too many Christians are emotional givers, they do not wait to understand and hear from God before they give. If God has not spoken to you and you decide to give by your emotional impulses, don’t blame God if you do not get any reward and especially when you begin to suffer lack.
God wants us to give willingly and cheerfully, not grudgingly. If you want to give, give only what you have the ability to. The fact that you want to support a church or ministry, does not mean that you should commit financial suicide thereby frustrating your business, family finance, your education and any other aspect of your life. God expects you to prosper in life.
The fact that you are unable to give at present does not mean that God is angry with you, by His grace you will be able to give in the very near future.
God knows each of us according to our several abilities and strength. The widow who gave her mite, did so with the whole of her heart, and what is more important than the amount she gave, is the fact that her heart was in her giving.

The glory that accompany our obedience in giving according to the word of God has no limit. Go after God with all your heart even when it seem strange and you will be amazed the blessings that will follow.

UNDERSTANDING SCRIPTURAL PRINCIPLES ON GIVING (PART 2)

MAY 6TH

TEXT: Matthew 6:1-4 King James Version (KJV)
1.  Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
2.  Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
3.  But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
4.  That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

Today as we continue our study on understanding scriptural principles on giving, I want to start by a profound quote from Bishop David Oyedepo, who said, “Prosperity does not answer to prayer and fasting but to the principle of giving.” The first time I heard these words I was wondering if this was not too absolute a statement, but then as I searched the scriptures myself, it became clear that all the cases that I considered, there was one form of giving or the other preceding the release of prosperity. Let’s look at a few of those scriptures;
Give and it shall be given unto you, good measure pressed down, shaken together, running over shall men give unto your bosom (Luke 6:38).
It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35).
Seek ye first the kingdom of God and its righteousness and all these shall be added unto you (Matt. 6:33).
A careful study of Malachi 3:8-12 will reveal to us that the reason many Christians are struggling to succeed in life is connected to their disregard for the principle of giving.
If you truly want to prosper and be truly blessed, you must go beyond fasting and prayer to obeying the principles in the word of God as touching giving.
2 Cor. 9:6, “…He which sow sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.”

Don’t frustrate your own destiny, obey God in giving and you will be amazed the glory that will follow your life. Shalom!

UNDERSTANDING SCRIPTURAL PRINCIPLES ON GIVING (PART 1)

APRIL 5TH

Today, so much is said about giving but not many are careful enough to study their Bible to understand what the word of God says about giving. Only those who understand and live by the principles of giving are able to attract the full blessings of giving. Today, we are going to begin a study on some of the scriptural principles on giving.
In Matthew 6:1-4, Jesus addressed the issue of giving but we must understand the kind of giving being addressed here. This is important because many of the time most people quote the scripture out of context and then apply it in other context and this passage is one passage that many quote out of context. Verse 3 of our text for today is one verse that has been over generalized. Many are quick to say, the Bible says, when you give, your left hand should not know what your right hand give. This is the reason why some people refuse to have their contributions to the work of God to be recorded because the left hand must not know what the right hand is doing. But the truth is that they may have overgeneralized or used this scripture out of context.
Let’s read carefully and understand what the scripture is addressing here. Verse 2 reveals to us what kind of giving is being addressed here and the attitude the Lord was addressing. KJV says, “…when thou doest thine alms…”, but the Amplified version says, “…whenever you give to the poor…”. This tells us that the Lord was addressing giving to the poor and the attitude that is expected of us when we give to the poor. He is saying, if you want God to reward your alms giving or act of charity to the poor, you must not make noise about it like hypocrites do, why? when you do that, you humiliate the poor and make him/her look pitiable and unfortunate. But worse than that, you take the glory that should go to God, but it is God who gives us the power to get the wealth to be a blessing.
I know this will take some time for some people to understand but please note that if this is not addressing the issue of giving to the poor, our Lord Jesus would not have publicly announced what the widow gave and commended her giving. You see, the giving here is not to the poor. It is not alms giving. It is giving to God in the house of God (see Mark 12:41-44).
Again, when David and the people of Israel gave for the building of the temple the exact amount was recorded. When Solomon gave at the dedication of the temple it was recorded.

When the little boy gave his lunch of five loaves and two fish to Jesus it was recorded and by reason of his giving many were blessed. We must realise that when we give to the Lord, it motivates others and encourages them to follow our good example. Let’s not over spiritualize certain things by our own interpretation of the scripture. If Jesus commended the widow who gave two mite publicly, then there is much for us to learn. But when you give to the poor, do so in secret and your heavenly Father will reward you with blessings that you cannot hide.

SUBMERGED IN POWER AND GLORY PART 2

MAY 4TH

TEXT: Mark 9:2-9 King James Version (KJV)
2. And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them.
3. And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them.
4. And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.
5. And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
6. For he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid.
7. And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
8. And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves.
9. And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead.

It is important to celebrate every little manifestation of the presence of God in our lives and meeting. It is not our right, it is a glorious privilege.

CONTEMPLATION
I wish I can give you a formula to help you know what to do to attract a particular desired degree of glory, but that is only possible in the magic world. What we have is greater than magical acts. However, the truth remains that any man who is in continual fellowship with God never ceases to amaze his generation. To fellowship with God is to commune with wonder and glory, and no man coming from such fellowship comes empty. From scriptural and contemporary accounts, when some mortals are visited by angelic beings, they struggle to stand on their feet.
The reason why they struggle to stand is because when such angles visited they came wrapped up in the awesome glory of God. When a man spends quality time in the presence of God similar things happen, and people fall under their ministration or by mere contact with them. When this happens we say the man is anointed. Your time of fellowship is a time to be submerged in the power and the glory of God. Don’t joke with it.

PRACTICAL ISSUES
If your fellowship with God is intact nothing will become too much for you to handle. Men and demons respect the anointing more than any title, credentials or position. Go for the presence of God.

Find some time to be alone with God today and take note of the things He brings to your attention. You will be amazed what will come out of such moments.

SUBMERGED IN POWER AND GLORY PART 1

APRIL 3RD

One most interesting and fascinating experiences I have encountered in private or public worship, is that moment when suddenly you are submerged in an avalanche of glory and you begin to fall. You try to gain control and “Boom!” you hit the floor. It is glorious and your life is never the same.

CONTEMPLATION.
Often when we invite God to our moments of worship we forget that when He truly shows up, our frail being does  not have the power to stand in His awesome presence. But like He did with Adam at the cool of the day, it was meant to be a time of spiritual empowerment and systematic update of the man He created. As you make use of an original computer it is required for you to do software update once in a while for it to remain relevant to meet the needs ahead. And the heavenly Father knew that there was no way the man He created could have become fully like Him the day Adam was made. That would be too much power for a creation of His to handle. Therefore, at the cool of the day when Adam would have become exhausted from work as he administered the earth, it became appropriate to come and refresh him. It was an empowerment for the assignment ahead. After such encounters, nothing was a problem too big for Adam to handle the next day.

“Our times of worship are actually times of spiritual renewal. They are opportunities for us to be transformed as we encounter the awesome glory of God, but not many get it... The manifest glory of man was meant to be greater than that of the angels, but after the fall, mortal man could not stand the presence of angels.” FFPW p104

That challenge will change for good if you will just keep your fellowship with God real and fresh.

PRACTICAL ISSUES
Until you approach worship as an intimate relationship, all you will have will be mere religious activities.

When was the last time you got submerged in the glory of God?

THE SOURCE OF GREAT IDEAS

MAY 2ND

TEXT : Job 32:8 King James Version (KJV)

8 But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.

A careful study of history will reveal to you that most of the scientists and inventors who propounded theories that has contributed to massive transformation were Christians. In their walk with God they were divinely inspired to see what others could not. Skill is good, but divine inspiration is better. If you have a lively and intimate relationship with the Lord, you cannot run out of ideas, rather you would be struggling with keeping up and executing your ideas.

If you find yourself not having any inspiration or lacking ideas, it is possible there is something wrong with your relationship with God and as soon as you fix it, you will get back on course.
Sometimes, lack of inspiration may be from the fact that you have not finished your previous assignment from God. Of what use is it for you to be given a new instruction when you have not delivered on the previous one. The Lord once said, “He that is faithful over little more shall be added”.

Once you experience something like this, go back to the last instruction God gave you, and see if you completely obeyed it. Many of the time, not completing your God given assignment can cut off the flow of divine instructions from your life. If you fail to follow simple instructions, the Lord will not see the need to give you new ones. He would wait for you to obey first, before He would speak further.

The vision of God is with an open end, He reveals one step at a time, He would not tell you everything at once. It is when you obey Him in step one, that He will reveal to you step two. A lot of people do not want to do this, and as long as you are not waiting for Him and following His instructions, you are not going to go beyond where you are.
When someone only make reference to when God use to speak to him, He is simply admitting that He is no longer in sync with God in his personal relationship with God.

If you really want to excel in life, then grow your personal relationship with God daily.
