TEXT: Matthew 8:5-13.
Every one of us has been called
to serve one way or the other. The rich and the poor, those in the seat of
power and those under them are called to serve one way or the other. From our
passage, it was the centurion who was serving his servant at that very moment.
There must have been something extraordinary about the servant of the centurion
that made his master take the pain to go seek the favor of Jesus when he was
sick. It is obvious that this was not his only servant, yet he left every other
engagement to make sure that this particular one lives. It would have been easy
for him to get another servant to do his job but it would not be easy to find
another servant with the same heart, passion and commitment. We live in a world
where true and sincere commitment is becoming increasingly scarce. There are
people who serve under their boss and before long the business of their boss
crumbles while they within a short time start theirs with the money they
craftily stole while under their boss. But they have forgotten that whatsoever
a man sows that shall he also reap (See Galatians 6:7).
There is a reward for true
loyalty. It may not come when you think, but it will come when it is most
needed. When you serve with a truly sincere and loyal heart, you make those you
serve become indebted to you. The servant in our passage for today would have
died in his sickness but because of his usefulness, his master went an extra
mile for him. If our presence or absence
is not highly valued by those we serve then we are only busy bodies and most
unfortunate. Devotional 2013 by Rev. Igho L.Y: The Glorious Fountain Ministries.
