THE WISDOM OF GOD (PART 6)

NOVEMBER 18TH

TEXT: John 2:1-10King James Version (KJV)

2 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:

2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.

3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.

7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.

8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.

9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,

10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

In the story found in our text for today, we often fail to commend the servants who in my opinion played a very important role in helping to make this miracle at the wedding in Cana possible. In the first place, it must require a good degree of patience for them to take Mary serious when she told them to do whatever Jesus would tell them to do. In my understanding of the story, once Mary said so, she walked away leaving the servants with Jesus. We are not told how long they waited for Jesus to make up his mind, since he had said it was not yet time. If these servants were some of us, they would have said, “well, there is no use waiting, since Jesus said it was not time”, but they did not do that, they simply waited till he made up his mind. When he finally made up his mind, he told them to do something way out of the question. They were hoping he will give them money to go get some wine or at least show them how to get some, instead he told them to fill the water pots with water. Amazingly, they went on with the instruction without questioning his intention. Another thing that caught my attention about these servants is the fact that their hearts were ready and willing to obey the instruction to the very end. They did not only fill the pots with water, they filled it to the brim, which was an uncommon response, considering the challenge at hand. Today, it is even difficult to find tongue talking Christians who are willing to carry out simple instructions not to speak of going the extra mile to ensure that it is well executed.

So many persons have walked away from the manifestation of their miracles because they felt like they know too much. Such persons often lack the patience and wisdom to obey what they consider “unreasonable instructions” like the one given by Jesus and are unable to wait to see this kind of miracle become a reality. Just as the role of these servants was very important in making this miracle a reality, so also is the role of people with a willing heart in the making of miracles. Can the Lord find you helpful in making a miracle possible? Think about this.
